Thank you all for your kind comments. The stag in the second photograph had just defeated another stag, (during the rut), and was really strutting his stuff - hence the pose.
The first image was taken on the back foot, as the stag just stepped out in front of me, with his rack back-lit by the sun. It really was a case of point, focus and shoot, as the stag was as startled as I was.
