Oystercatcher - CC please

OK - this is a bit different to my usual stuff, and I can see so many flaws in it already... but something about it just draws me, so I wanted outside opinions! I think I'd have been happier if I could have gotten closer - but that wasn't possible... any thoughts more than welcome! Please view full size!

Re: Oystercatcher - CC please

I feel there's too much room on the left, and not quite enough at the top Z.

Like the capture of the bird itself tho

It's a shame that you couldn't get closer, but I can see why you've gone for this crop

Do you still have the un-cropped version?

Re: Oystercatcher - CC please

I do... it's a massive empty blue space with waves and an oystercatcher dot in the middle

For what it's worth, I did have a sort-of long, thin panoramic shot in mind when I shot it, with the waves at the bottom of the shot and the oyc flying over - but the oyc was a bit far away to pull it off - if there'd been more than one oyc it may have helped too!

That's why I asked you.... Sometimes the shot you've described can work really really well, having a minimalist image with loads of space and one small, key feature, in this case the bird...but like I said earlier, I can absolutely see why you've gone for this crop.

It was when Azz mentioned you had a bit too much room to the left, although I'm assuming he means on the right ( maybe not though ) and I thought it might be quite interesting to add even more room on the right if the original image allows it.

Have a go...it might be quite interesting to see what kind of results you get

Re: Oystercatcher - CC please

There are times when a longer zoom lens definately comes into its own, but even if you had a 400mm or even 500 mm lens I don't think you would have got as close as you would wish.
However there is on alternative and thats put on a bikini and wade out to get closer.

Re: Oystercatcher - CC please

No, it wouldn't have been close enough, that much I know! You can't get very close to these birds unfortunately, not for this sort of shot - the problem is that unless you set up hours in advance, with a hide (and hopefully don't get washed away), then they see you coming from miles away - they were flying off because we were there despite how far away we were!

Will have a play about with it MD, see if I can get any more interesting crops!
