Opinions on Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G AF?

Any thoughts? There's one with an F65 in the paper at the moment, and I'm tempted... Done a bit of research and it's supposed to be a good lens, has anyone used it? What sort of price do they go for second hand?

I don't have any experience with this lens, but hopefully someone on here has.

What's the price?

Sorry, just in from the pub so I won't write much! Crappy day at work too...

Meant to be excellent for the money. Not sure why you would want one given that you have the 18-135, but it will be smaller and lighter and is meant to be sharp. If it is stupidly cheap, get it. I would think you would be better off getting something like a Tamron 17-50, the 28-75, or the Sigma 18-50 all at a contsant f2.8. All will be dearer than the 28-80.

Nikon 28-105mm (great walkaround on D700!)

Re: Opinions on Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G AF?

Thanks BC - thats' what I wanted to hear. I 'want' it because it was in the paper... and I don't like not buying stuff

Having had a quick snoop online at SH prices - it's a bit overpriced anyway. She wants €75 for the F65 and the lens - and TBH I could probably pick it up for around €40 for both.

The 18-135, from what I've read, isn't as sharp and clear as the 28-80, however, it'll do me for now. I was just trying to talk myself out of it - and didn't need much reason not to buy it TBH - better to keep saving and get better stuff

Re: Opinions on Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G AF?

If you moderately want it, give it a few days, chances are she will still have a film camera. You could be polite, call up and say it was overpriced but you would offer what you have seen them going for, £40-£50. You could always sell the body on Ebay.

That lens is meant to be a bargain with good performance but ultimately i don't think you will be gaining a great deal. The 18-135 is an ok lens, had one on a d80, but it's not as good as the 18-70 although any lens performs from about f8 anyway. If you want a noticeable difference in performance, particularly around f2.8-f4, get one of the lenses I mentioned.
