Just had a quick fiddle too and it works well in mono. You need to lighten your reds a little when converting so the face doesn't go too grey, then if you tweak the levels in an adjustment layer to bring the contrast up you shouldn't need to dodge and burn. I whacked a whopping great vignette on top too in my play which added some good drama!
Have an experiment yourself and see what you can come up with.
