Lens Problem

Really depressed the lens that came with my new Canon camera doesn't seem to be working properly!! It's not focusing properly and seems to be working slow. It has not been dropped or anything. Wondering if maybe a bit of dust has got into the mechanics whilst taking photo's on Sunday?

Any advice from a very depressed new owner

Re: Lens Problem

There is not a lot you can do with a malfunctioning lens. I think this is still under warranty so If so I would definitely take it back and get it exchanged or repaired.

One thing you could check is the gold coloured contacts on the body and lens. Just give them a quick clean with a cloth just to make sure you are getting a dgood electrical connection between lens and body.

Sorry not much help

Re: Lens Problem

First check the contacts between the body and the lens are clean, wipe with a clean piece of cotton cloth then mount and dismount a few times and try again. Would not think it is dust, the lens should be sealed against dust and water except in the most exceptional circumstances. I have lens that are veteran speedway goers and my OH is a cameraman and has a Sony video camera that has been used for speedway work for 8 years with no noticeable effects apart for the fact that it could not be described as mint condition.

If cleaning the contacts does not work I would contact the suppliers and say you are not happy, there is always a chance that something will go wrong with a manufactured part and it is sad that it has gone wrong for you.

Re: Lens Problem

Do you have another lens to try? As the body drives the lens, the fault could be anywhere.

Wild

I think you will find that on Canon Eos digital the motors are in the lens and not in the body as in Nikon.

That's why you get Canon lens with different types of motor i.e ring type, Micro USM, Micro USM II.

Correct, but the lens can't do anything unless it is told to do so by the Body, so the body could be talking rubbish to the lens as it were!

Thats why I wondered if he had another lens he could try

Re: Lens Problem

I see where you're coming from.

It's always best to stick another lanes on the body and see what the result is.

I read your post the wrong way, something I do too regularly.
