Evening Ellies

I bumped into these guys yesterday, it’s some time since they have been in our area, so I was very happy to see them. I knew they would probably come to the water eventually so I settled into a nice thorny bush overlooking a ravine to wait.

They did eventually arrive, but by then it was after sunset and the light was rubbish. Also, some hippos had surfaced and wanted to use the ravine to get out of the river to go and graze. The ellies were too nervous of the hippos to go down to drink (there were a few very young ones in the herd) and they bumbled around on the side of the ravine (opposite to me, fortunately, I’m never keen on getting too close to mama ellies, unpredictable beasties) so I got some shots in. The “beep” was off, but in the silence, the shutter sounds like a gunshot, which is why the one looks a bit defensive (read: ready to squash something). I realize the light is bad and these are handheld, but I kind of liked the “painting” effect of the low light. These are basically straight off the camera and will need plenty of tweaking, I'm sure, but any feedback would be really appreciated.

These two were taken earlier in better light, but it was harsh and very flat, so I mucked around with the levels a bit.....

You knew I was going to throw a sunset in didn’t you?

Re: Evening Ellies

Grrrr!

Lovely set, and I think you are putting them down too much, these are wild Ellies, not some Zoo ones that most of us photograph, so bloody well done

I love that Elephants are so protective of theirs babies, makes them even more endearing.

Love the close ups, and the sunset is beautiful. 2nd pic is my fave.

Re: Evening Ellies

Agree with the others - great shots and I love the baked dusty colours.

Love the composition in number 2 and the eye contact makes it stronger (in my view) than number 3.

I like the crops too although not sure which I like best out of the textured one or the smooth one.

Re: Evening Ellies

Sitting up a spiky tree hiding from a rather annoyed matriarch - hmmmmmm - you're a braver (more foolhardy) man then me!

Hey, but worth it for such great environmental images - youre so lucky to have such amazing opportunities.

- that would be more foolhardy - brave, I'm not - I've stayed in one piece by being scared of everything bigger than a scrub hare (and I'm nervous of those in groups).
