If someone is advertising a service, I would expect them to have experience in that area.
Thanks GH and to an extent you are right, however the case is that they are uncomfortable, not incapble as Jols pointed out.

To add going from portraiture to weddings is a smaller step than wildlife to weddings

It depends what you mean by proficient. I wouldn't expect a wedding photographer to be an expert on 'panning' for example.

Oh yes, they certainly aren't incapable - however their products might not be quite as good as someone who is dedicated to that type of photography.

Hey - as far as I am concerned we are just debating a topic, not pointing the finger at anyone - all this is hypothetical (well my examples obviously aren't hypothetical - they are people I know ) however the basic ideas of providing a service are

You will find alot of wedding photographers work in portraiture too as well as vice versa. Soley doing weddings for a living is not really viable as the money from weddings tends to come in only during the summer months.

To offer weddings/portraits is a natural progression in this area

Nowt like a good debate

Re: Have you got paid for your work?

If it just boils down to the portfolio, that is easy to fix. Offer to shadow at a wedding, offer to do freebies - get yourself a portfolio. Then if people like what you can do based on what you have done - Bobs your uncle

Re: Have you got paid for your work?

Well I would in NO way call myself a professional by any stretch, but to answer the question, I have been paid for taking pictures of clients dogs, to date after a quick count, 37 different clients. I have been paid for photographs to be used in a book to be published in July, and I have aslo been to peoples houses to photograph their dogs and been paid for that. I have been asked to do a wedding, but declined!!
