I get a bit confused with Canon tho - is this better than the 50D ? :-/
Must say I prefer the noise handling of the Nikons, although the 5DMk2 was pretty good from what I remb, not sure about this 500d tho.

I agree - Nikon seem to have a much more tonal quality - but Canon seem sharper on wildlife etc. It's a hard one alright - I need both!

The XXD range is better than the XXXD range (however new developments mean that newer XXXD cameras have more/improved features than the older XXD cameras).

The 50D from what I understand , had a bad rap about noise, but there are things you can do like switch the Noise reduction off and fiddle with some of the settings, and many people say once you have sussed the settings out, it is an awesome camera.
Have been reading up alot about the 50D, can't post the articles as they all come from forums, but it appears the initial reviews by some mags etc, have been edited. Plus, lots of normal togs have tried these new settings, and have now got the camera as they wanted it.
