Scanning slides,negs etc

Ey up, just bought myself a shiny new scanner today and thought Id have a go at scanning a few slides, first result the slide came out at less than a mb second one was going to be nearly 5 Gb so was just wondering what everyone else uses file size wise. I know most of you are probably digital photographers but if anyone can give me some hints that would be great thanks.

Re: Scanning slides,negs etc

I don't have a film scanner myself, but perhaps try to getting one at about 10MB and taking it from there?

Look forward to seeing them

Well, spent the best part of the mornin trying to work out the best scanning resolutions etc... in the end I stuck it on full auto mode and its giving me file sizes in the region of 6-8mb,s which is sufficient for archiving I suppose, in fact it was a bit too efficient, I didnt realise how dusty my slides were ! although I did one side by side with dust removal on and off and it makes a big difference, now to resize them for upload.

Re: Scanning slides,negs etc

I just bought a an Epson V500, its a flatbed scanner capable of up to 6400 dpi and comes with Elements 4.0, Im just trying to get to terms with it cos if I scan at 100% with a resolution of 6400 dpi Im getting a file size in excess of 4.57GB ! so I just stuck it on auto mode and Im getting decent results that run out at 6-8 Mb,s which is ideal for archiving I suppose. HTH.
