Refilling you ink carts

Do any of you refill your cartriges ?
I've been doing it for years, you can save a fortune DIY.
The printer I have is an HP1220c it prints A3 size paper.
The cartrige is enormous, 38mil capacity, and they're expensive to replace, however, after many refills the sponges inside the M/B/Y reservoirs start to shrink, thus making it impossible to fully refill them as the ink just keeps overflowing from the filler holes.
So methinks there has to be a way, yes there is , I got some cotton wool and a slim jewellers screwdriver and crammed in as much cotton through the filler holes as the cart could take, thus making it easier to fully recharge the cartrige.

PS: If your fingers aint covered in ink when you're finished, you aint done it right.
