Composition discussion

two of my last photos posted have been commented on about cutting off my little fellas toes and cutting of the top of his head. i understand what some people are saying

BUT

when viewing peoples websites like the pros that advertise above they are always doing it.

SO

when is it artistic to do it and when it it bad composition?

discuss

Re: Composition discussion

I wouldn't use photos as my 'best' if they not composed properly regardless of the shot.

thats why I fill memory cards and use 1/2 images from my wide selection

Re: Composition discussion

I liked that pic of your Luke ( gets very confusing with all these Lukes), where he has his eye shut and a part of his head cut off, there is nothing wrong with it in my eyes

I like weird compositions anyway

Re: Composition discussion

For professional use advice without costing anything I would suggest looking at several other professional photographers portraits on the web. You can then decide what looks better and adapt yours to suit (sneaky or wot?)

I call my Luke a little ......................

Yeah, I think it is what you like, having said that some of my most fave pics I have taken are ones where I have used the rule of thirds, like the lighthouses.
Maybe it depends on the subject???? I like natural, relaxed pics of kids

Re: Composition discussion

For me the composition and tecnique should both come together to contribute to the effectiveness and impact of what the photographer is trying to portray in the final image. If cutting off body parts or key/fundamental pieces of the scene do not enhance the capture, but rather hinder it and show weakness in the craft, its important that the tecnique is reviewed and corrected.

Interpretation for artistic merit will vary from person to person, of course it will, but you need to look at what makes a less conforming capture/painting open to this kind of recognition, otherwise any Tom, Dick or Harry will be calling them selves an "artist".

Composition and tecnique explores the nature of perception & intentional image-making, allowing the viewer to understand the essence of the subjuct or purly to invoke innovative thinking. An understanding of the basic principles such as, balance, colour, lines, shapes, textures, lighting and spacial awareness all add or take away from the final piece allowing the pro/artist do define themselves against amature's who mearly claim artistic merit for poorly executed photos/paintings ect ect.

"Good" composition will always give the viewer the understanding and the foundations to manipulate their response to the image. If you have failed to do this, then you need to review your tecnique.
