How to: Layers in Photoshop

open both of the photo’s you want to use in PS, make sure that both photo’s have similar lighting and direction of light which will make the blending easier.

on the photo of Luke select him using one of the selection tools, magic wand polygonal lasso whichever you prefer to use.

when selected press cmd C or cntrl C if on windows to copy luke.

open the photo you wish to put him in and press cmd v or cntrl v, this will paste luke onto a new layer.

make sure you highlight the layer with luke in on the layer panel and use the move tool to place him where you want, if he is the wrong size then use the move tool to re size him to the correct size.

use the blur tool to soften the edges a little, set the blur tool on around 50% to add a little blur but not too much.

press cmd or cntrl L to bring up the levels panel and adjust the levels of luke and get the lighting of him as close to the light of the beach scene.

 job done

Pretty simple way of doing it, but works for me and lets you get the basics before doing some more intricate stuff to get it looking a little more realistic.
