Help me with choosing a lens

ok this is a bit previous as i only just got the camera today

BUT

i need advice on lens.

of course the nifty fifty will be the first but what then.

i want to be able to take pics of my son playing but be about ten to twenty feet away from him.

so i suppose a telephoto lens?

if someone could give me some specs i could check up on them.

thanks

Re: Help me with choosing a lens

The nifty fifty won't autofocus on the d40 series Jols...

I would get the 55-200 VR, it's great telephoto and for portraits if you zoom right in and are in a big enough place (nice blurry backgrounds - esp if there is great distance behind the subject and whatever is behind them)

Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm

ah, when I looked at the nikon lens 55-200 there were several and I am not sure which one is best.

I will be researching this.

Re: Help me with choosing a lens

Also have a look at the 70-300mm VR lens, it has a great reviews, and having got one myself I have to agree. You may find 200mm max telephoto lens just hasn't got quite enough reach.
