Re: Milkweed, Owl and Tiger longwing

Like number 2 and 4 All are great though. Wish we had somewhere like this near us (there *might* be one somewhere in Ireland I guess... if we were lucky!)! Been photographing butterflies very badly myself today! Had totally the wrong lens, and so couldn't get anything I was pleased with, but we did find and shoot a Green Hairstreak which was awesome!

Re: Milkweed, Owl and Tiger longwing

These are spectacular Grant, number three is my personal favourite, but they are all very sharp and lovely colours.

Were these taken at minimum focus distance or did you use tubes?

They're all wonderful DJ, couldn't pick a fave, though I think the Owl Butterfly comes close. Works so well, with the wood, the warm light of the background works so well with the tones of the butterfly.

Thanks Ken. These were all shot without my extension tubes but I did have them on when I first arrived there. I tried my 400mm f5.6 L with an extension tube but found because of the low light and the crowds that it was not working out very well. I tried one on the 70-200mm as well but found it to slow, so managed fine without them, some of these butterfly's could fill the frame at minimum foccussing distance and focal length I used anyway, so no need for ectension tubes. It was so hot in there and the ammount of people spoiled the experience a bit, so we left and went for something to eat and a wipe down and came back 10 minutes before last entry and found we nearly had the place to ourselves for the next 40 minutes it seemed much cooler as well, probablly due to the lack of people in there this time.
