What Swan

Have had these two swans 'floating' about on the local lake for the past few weeks. Initially, seeing the yellow beak and size of the bird from a distance assumed they were Whoopers...but got closer today and I'm not convinced that they are now...what do you guys think??

Re: What Swan

They ARE Whooper's. Some of the key features are:

the straight neck carriage is typical of the WS.
The male (Cob) has no bulb on the upper cere (top of its bill)
The male is still showing an iron-tinged tint to it's neck - typical of wintering Ws which spend summer in Iceland dabbling in the iron-rich waters.

Bewick's is the other option, but they are much smaller with far shorter necks.

Nice Info Jack.

There's tons of Swan pics on here and I've no idea what my ones were. Any chance you could start a 'name your Swan' thread as I'd be happy to find out what mine were....

Re: What Swan

Thanks Jack It was the red-orange on the beak that baffled me.

Although we have a nice lake at this park, it certainly isn't the usual type of place you would expect to see them.

Re: What Swan

definitely whoopers - you can tell from the bill also the size Bewicks are smaller and the yellow on their bill is more rounded, where as on a whooper it extends to a point
