Aperture

hi everyone, sorry if its been asked already but can somone explain too me in laymans terms about aperture as i do get very confused . .......... f 1.8 make the background out of focus ? and the larger the number ie you get more background in focus ? or is it the other way around !! god i wish it was more simple ! i have always used shutter speed as i understand that ie motorbike racing to freeze action its shutter speed 70 and smokey water about shutter speed 15/ or 20 ... many thanks for any help. trace x
