I think its a "general" or unexpected error. Have you tried all the suggestions in your manual?

Re: error99 on Canon EOS 350D

Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens and on the throat of the camera. A small pencil eraser is good for this.

Does this just happen with one particular lens or with all lens?

Re: error99 on Canon EOS 350D

If it doesn't happen with other lenses then the problem possibly lies within the lens itself. If you know of someone else that has a Canon camera try using that lens on theirs, this would prove it down to being a fault within the lens if it happened on another camera.
With the lens fully extended it must cause some sort of disconnection which would mean a repair job..
You say it happens in macro mode but you don't say if it happens in normal mode, it could be down to a faulty macro switch in the lens.

Just had a thought, is their any movement where the lens is connected to the camera, say up/down movement? The slightest play on the connection point between camera and lens could result in the error showing up. This needs to be a really firm connection without play.

If trying to do it with the extn rings the fault could be with them.
