Canon 40D

Anyone have experience of this camera?

I am looking to upgrade from 450D but can't cope with the weight of the more pro canon's due to surgery.

Since the release of the 60D it is hard to get a new/nearly new 40D and I have seen an offer I like.

Also I have a couple of weeks in Sutherland / Caithness coming up in July and want to do justice to 'big sky country'.

Any views or advice very welcome.

Re: Canon 40D

I've had a very quick go of one as my mate had one - I thought it was pretty good too.

I think it will all depend on specs - what you need and what you can do without. Something worth bearing in mind though, is that the newer models will almost certainly have high-ISO performance.

Re: Canon 40D

Hi Daisy

We got our daughter (Flic180987 Forum name) a used 40D a couple Christmas's ago because she has always shown an interest in photography and she gets on very well with it. I have tried it on a few occasions and it's good to handle.

Here is one of Flic's posts taken with her 40D and my macro lens (EF100, f2.8): http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=12545

Re: Canon 40D

I still have one - most of my shots on here are taken with a 40D

Quite a bit bigger and heavier than your 450D but nothing compared to a 1D.

ISO is noise free up to about 1600 so more than adequate for most things unless you're needing mega fast shutter speeds in poor light. Build quality is solid and weather sealing will cope with the odd downpour. Compared to your 450D you'll get a much higher frames per second speed if needed and (if not on paper) you will get improved Autofocus & better metering. The addition of the LCD on the top of the body is a big plus point too in my book.

I would say bang for buck the 40D is still right up there. I could lend you one for a few days if you're swithering over it.

PS

Sutherland & Caithness are probably my favourite places although It's been a while since I've been up that way. Make sure you bring us back plenty of images.

Re: Canon 40D

Yep - Dunnet Head - I nearly lost my Spaniel (Fingal) when we were at the lighthouse - he chased some birds over the dyke and nearly went over the cliff !

Wick - I've spent some time working up there - used to stay in the Mackay's Hotel on the corner. I still remember the hangovers lol

Strathy - went to the lighthouse once but that's about it. I know it's a bit further West but Sandwood Bay has to be one of my favourite places up there.
