Re: Fun in the snow......

Get rid of the blue. It really doesn't add anything to the shot, which, in it self is very good. You can get a feeling of cold without incorrect WB

Re: Fun in the snow......

Do agree with Sam - the blues not needed, but didn't say anything as you said it was what you were aiming for.

Re: Fun in the snow......

Here's one with a bit less blue...

But I'd like to hear opinions on how everyone would 'take out' excessive blues, I have an iMac and use Aperture to adjust pics, is it just a case of adjusting the white balance or hue or is there another way of making the scene look a bit more natural? Thanks for everyone's input so far
Hmmm how do I get it back to looking like the excellent pic by Daisychain?

Re: Fun in the snow......

Just tried using the eye dropper in white balance on a grey area - what do you think?

Re: Fun in the snow......

WelshGold - it is a lovely shot, the blue cast is a little too strong for my liking but sometimes incorrect WB can give interesting effects You can either set your WB manually before you shoot or a couple of tricks are to turn the camera to cloudy or shade WB and over expose slightly, this should give you far more realistic snow

KK - I assume you have done PP to that Atlas shot? There is a halo to the left of him that seems too perfect to be the reflection of the sun?

Sharpened and Contrast adjusted. Thats it. The sun was gorgeous. I have the original for comparison.

The gold hues are from the sun. I shot in the "golden hour" this happens twice a day and photographers tend to love it as its the best natural light. The sun is low. gold and diffused.

Try and keep the sun behind the subject and to one side to create nice shadows, depth and colour.

and another with the gold halo.

I personally do not like that blue effect at all. Theres no reason for it. Yes WB can be adjusted to add effect but in this instance it looks amateur and technically wrong. The photo itself is gorgeous and really doesnt need the blue. The expression and feeling of action from the dogs is what this photo is all about for me

Im not familiar with Imac Aperture, but yes it would be a case of adjusting the WB. You may well be able to take a sample of the blue (should look like a little dropper thing icon) and it will adjust accordingly.

Re: Fun in the snow......

I wasn't referring to the golden highlights, but to the blown halo to his left It seems it is blown due to the sun and the PP work simply enhanced it (it just looked too 'perfect'). I assume your later advice was aimed at the OP? Your camera must have good Auto WB since the original image data shows it was set to Auto. Unfortunately on most cameras the Auto WB tends to give the snow a blue/grey cast (although admittedly not that strong), so they will have to adjust the settings before they shoot.

I was trying to be encouraging to the OP rather than simply highly critical given that they don't have the C&C tag in their profile checked and give them ways of adjusting their WB, rather than simply telling them to get rid of it but not telling them how. However I have just seen that the thread is tagged C&C (very easy to miss, especially since I tend to look at New Posts).

WelshGold - Samnooshka uses Aperture so hopefully she will be able to assist you with the settings However I personally would look at adjusting your camera settings before you shoot rather than waiting to take out the excessive blue in PP

One of the links on the right deals with setting custom WB - you might want to take a look at it?
