Woodpecker - odd colour ?
A few woodpecker shots from Loch of the Lowes today.
I've had a family of great spotted woodpeckers feeding themselves and their young in and around the garden for the last couple of years but I've never noticed this colouration before in either our male, female or juveniles.
I'll be honest that I don't know much about woodpeckers. All I go by is the male has red on the back of his head, juveniles the top and the female have no red.
Perhaps this is normal and I've just never noticed these golden colours before.

1st time i have seen these colours too Phil, usually just black and white wings and red rump i think. But like you dont know much about them. All i know is that there are around 80,000 in the UK and all hiding from me

Just the light Phil i feel, iridescence in the plumage, shows well in 2 and 3. Its said without sunlight Kingfishers would appear brown.
