Re: Writing my xmas list ....Advice needed.

K
Is this the lens you are referring to ? I think this is the type of lens I was reading about. A telephoto lens that will take macro as well? Would this give me the ability to take photos whilst out and about, normally Fudge/kids etc, and then do some macro as well?

Re: Writing my xmas list ....Advice needed.

Remembering that you have an EOS 400D - so any 'normal' lens focal length will change due to the size of your digital sensor - I'd recommend the Canon 60mm Macro lens if you want true 1:1 Macro... This is equivalent to a normal (approx) 100mm Macro lens...

I'd go for this:

Canon 60mm Macro

it's well within your budget...

Some of the zoom lenses people refer to here have Macro modes - but they don't necessarily offer true Macro...

It depends whether you want good close ups from this lens - or you're expecting to use it in a multitude of situations...

If you want a versatile lens - then go for one of the ones recommended here with zoom and macro modes... If you want good quality close ups - then go for the Canon Macro lens...

Thanks, I am certainly building up some options here.

Re: Writing my xmas list ....Advice needed.

Of course - there's nothing stopping you having one lens this year - and another next year....

It's not necessarily an 'either/or' situation - maybe more a 'now/later' situation...

So it may be better to think not which one is best - but which one you'll get most use/fun out of to start with - and which one could help in the longer term

Whichever you choose - you'll make a good choice I'm sure...

And it's not what you've got - it's what you do with it...

You could have £10k worth of camera equipment but still take awful photos...

Let us know what you decide.. either way you're a winner...

Re: Writing my xmas list ....Advice needed.

Good luck Fudegely - when I was intersted in the canon, I was looking at the tamron and sigma lens (I think 55-200) as they were getting good write-ups

CLMG - two lens I am intersted in myself are the Nikkor DX 55-200mm VR lens and the 70-300mm version, both have excellent reviews and come highly recommended and both have anti shake built in. The 55-200 is about £175 and the 70-300 almost double that, but offers more zoom and is built to a more professional standard (is also heavier).

Re: Writing my xmas list ....Advice needed.

I have decided to ask for the sigma APO 70-300mm f4/5.6 DG Macro.......I think LOL.

The canon macro and a wide-angle will go on my wish list......unless I change my mind again.
