The printing company I use normally print at 72 dpi for a canvas (though they will go higher if you request it). Therefore it depends on how many MP your camera is and what size images you can produce at 72 dpi as to how large a canvas you can get.

For example, my camera (8.2 MP) takes photo's which are 3504 x 2336 (largest). This would produce a 48.7 x 32.4 inch print at 72 dpi. The more I increase the dpi, the smaller the print, so at 180 dpi I can only produce a 19.5 x 13 inch print.

Re: DPI Vs Megapixels Info

72dpi is screen resolution which is fine for using when looking at images on a computer/mac,

yet the common resolution for printing that my college have battered into our heads is 300dpi, which will get you roughly a 10x8 image on a 30D

yes it seems smaller but your image will be sharper, and if you want it bigger then just interpolate it in photoshop,

Image menu -> Image size then tick the box saying
'resample image' and make sure it is "bicubic smoother" when enlarging your photos.

This will save you alot of grief when you get a 48 x 32 print that you can see box shaped pixels all over it!

Trust me on this we have covered it lots in college!

Who do you use to print? as if thats what they recommend i would advise going somewhere else.

It depends, I use a different company to produce canvas prints than I do for photographic images. I had a 30" x 20" canvas produced and was more than pleased with the results. Due to the fabric used, you can not tell the difference between 72 dpi and a higher resolution image (though as I stated before, they will print at a greater resolution if you ask them ). I will certainly be using them again when I get another canvas done
