Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Phil

Don't just look at the camera but take into consideration the lens range offered, availabilty and lens price.

Azz
don't forget the D80 has an SD memory card whereas the D200 etc has compact flash.

if you have to buy different memory cards it all adds to the cost.

That's what's attracting me to a D80. Big choice of 'f' fit since the year dot, obviously fits my existing lenses plus the price wouldn't allow me to consider a new lens.

Don't the D80 and D200/300 use the same lens fit? :-/

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Yes they are the same right across the nikon range. if they work on the D50 then they will work on the D200/300.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Thinking on it the D300 would be the logical choice for anyone that has the D40/60/80/100 or similar.
Azz you are quite right, having got the D200 buying the D300 would make no sense unless it was used as the main camera with the D200 as backup.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Ken Rockwell says sell your D200 and get the D300 - saying there is a vast improvement That's saying sommin, especially considering how great the D200 is

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Build quality apart, the D200 isn't vastly different (spec wise) from the D80 infact you could probably group the D60 in the same bracket now.

The big differences lie between the D200 and the D300

Would I upgrade to a D60 - No
Would I upgrade to a D80 - Yes (with a chunk spent on a better lens)
Would I upgrade to a D200 - Yes (but extra cost of body might mean less on a lens)
Would I upgrade to a D300 - Yes (but more than I want to spend)

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Personally, I would love to see you get a D200 or D300 Phil! I reckon you'd be very happy with either of those.

I know it's tough when you have a family to think about tho!
