C & c

How easy do you guys find giving a C&C ?

I struggle, as I feel I am not qualified to give more experienced photographers my advice

But I do really welcome honest, helpful advice

I feel just lately, we are all falling into the trap of just saying lovely picture all the time.

I am not suggesting a bitch fest either

But if you like a pic say what is you like about it, and if you don't say what you find wrong. I think C&C is very helpful, as long as people take comments in the way they are intended.

Obviously, nobody wants a pic of theirs pulled to bits either, but I have noticed everybody is very polite on here so I can't see that being a problem

I admit I am the worse offender for just saying lovely pic!

Re: C & c

mmmmmmmmmmm interesting because if I dont care for a particular pic I struggled to find the right words.

Also a pic posted of a pet for instance does not always want c and c its just for fun.

So unless the posted have it written in their post I would not say if I found things wrong with it.

See I am hopeless at explaining myself lol

Re: C & c

I am by no means qualified to comment on the finer points of photography or of editing but I am able to express how I personally feel about the image and it's effect on me, no trouble with words but I do take as much care as I can to not hurt but at the same time keep the clarity of what I am trying to say.

However as I found when I posted a critique that was not in fully praise it would be followed with many posts saying how good it was etc. so I have decided to refrain from comment as my perception is obviously not in tune with the general feelings and my comments may prove counter productive and I would not wish that.

Re: C & c

Yeah, I agree that there can be snaps in the pet section, I do that quite alot mostly because ,though I have gorgeous pets, my pics don't seem to do them justice But there are also some cracking pics in there too

But, most of us do have the little C&C flag under our name so we should be okay with it, and not take it personally.

I will be honest I am not keen when someone just edits my pic , so I am going to remove my edit logo under my name.

I want feedback, how else am I going to grow as a photographer
I love this forum because everybody is so nice, there is another forum I tried where everybody just seemed bitchy, and all that was posted was negative comments. That doesn't work either.

As Blackcloud describes it, a sh!T sandwich, give me the bad with a little of good thrown in, so positve constructive stuff, not just, I hate this, its crap.

Snaps noooooooo!!!!

All points are valid!!! I value your advice, say what you feel, and why something doesn't work for you.

We all see things from different ways, it is useful to have all feedback

Don't you dare stop commenting xxxxxx

Re: C & c

Yes I had noticed, and mentioned it to Jols I thought you may be too busy to comment TBH, with the dog shows and stuff.

So stop it, and start giving feedback again all views are needed, and all I want is honest feedback,

I have removed my edit logo, as I do not like it when someone edits my pic I don't know why. Maybe it is because my images are my little babies

So touch my pics if you dare

Snapsy baby, start posting again xx

Re: C & c

Outwith the subjectivity of art in the first place...the trouble is, when everybody are friends, or know each other, nobody wants to go against the flow and voice opposing views. Posting comments over the t'internet makes it even more difficult as the context is often missing - which often leads to misinterpretation. Especially when that critique comes from a 'stranger'.

Some times I find it difficult to comment on pictures if they do absolutely nothing for me, or if they are really crap. Yes, I know we we all beginners once, but posting to get simple "Ooooo...Aaaaah..." type responses I admit to struggling with - even more so when nobody offers any meaningful criticism or advice.

I generally comment when I see something that I think has a starting point, or has the potential to be something better; not every picture on here fits that bill. I also can recognise where a beginner might want pointers, or even a more proficient practitioner who may be struggling with a technique or concept - and I tend to gear my comments accordingly rather than give technical overload; which would only serve to discourage.

I also think that some people on this, and other forums, actually don't like feedback - they much prefer pats on the head. Personally I can't see the point. I'd love someone to critique my pictures from time to time - that way I can accept the comments and make improvements - or alternatively, explain my rational or simply choose to ignore them.

I feel lucky because I trained for photography & post-processing in PS with the military thus am used to some pretty hard critiques - but more importantly some great support and knowledgeable people.

For someone to post "That doesn't do it for me, sorry", or similar to me is pointless - I'd rather know specifically why not and what could be done to improve that appeal, if possible - or I'd prefer that poster not to bother in the first place.

I think we all welcome positive critique - but we don't all respond positively to it. Perhaps there should be a list of people who dont want C&C rather than those that do.

Re: C & c

MS, I totally understand that you don't like your images edited, and think perhaps permission should alway be sought before this is done or the effort should be kept private. To edit someones work without permission and then publish it is more or less saying, look I can do it better than you even if it was your concept in the first place', think this is a bit on the rude side even if it is meant to be helpful. In the past I have been grateful for people editing my image after asking as I have then been able to try and emulate there efforts or even better them.

JR, I have said 'it does not do it for me' but think I have always said why. In most cases I can't tell the photographer how it can be improved except in the most basic matters because I don't have either the skill or experience.

I can, and have in the past said I don't like that because of this *** but like that ***, now I would find that helpful as it would send me back to look hard at my image and see if I could see what the problem was, and if I agreed correct it in the future. Are you saying that sort of comment is of no help to most people?

Re: C & c

Perhaps we should all start using this forum for improving our skills at constructive criticism. So instead of just opposing a previous post by saying I like it, or Lovely shot, it should be explained why you think the previous poster who did not like it was wrong.
