I lost 10 or so pictures of a triple headed daffodil that was in the garden. The program save one picture and some that I had on the card (some favs but they are all on pc and ex HD).

This is what it showed when trying to save files...




But on the plus side it did save one daff pic I wanted of a Triple Headed - 3 in 1 Daffodil ...

Does anyone know why this would have happened? And should I get a new card in case?

Hi Dave, this can sometime happen, I've seen it before, i'm not sure why though. If it is your only card then I would certainly get a second one just incase it starts doing it more often.

Not sure exactly why but I think it can just happen. It can happen when deleting photos from the card using the computer instead of the camera though, I do know that. Apparently always taking the card out to read it wears the conectors too (compared to using camera cables) If I were you, Id just replace it and keep that one as emergency backup once formatted. I have two cards for the HS20, one in the camera and one in my bag. Plus a card in the compact.

Perfectly normal. It is because there are some hidden files on the card for formatting, card, and other info.

There are ways of reclaiming this memory but I do not bother as it to much hassle.

Sorry, but it would take a very long time and a massive amount of insertions to wear out the contacts. All regular advice is to use a card reader to transfer the images to the computer (copy not move) and then delete or, preferably, format within the camera.

This reminds me of the old advice I was given as a young driver. "Use the engine and gearbox to slow down, changing down through the gear box until you have nearly stopped". What is cheaper to replace, brake pads or engine & gearbox.

Why use a very expensive camera to transfer images, and all activity takes it's toll, when a card reader costing a fiver will do the same

tbh it wasnt til I started using a card reader instead that I got problems, then since I've taken the advice I got, never had an issue again, so I'd be wary of changing back. Not that il never use a card reader but defo more wary now!

I only once used the camera to transfer images to a computer. Never again! It took an absolute eternity. So slooooow. 500 10Mb raw files into LR via my camera is not a cup of tea job but a whole afternoon

Have two USB3 card readers now just in case I misplace one again.

Im with Steve ,camera downloads far to slow ,my 8gb cards download RAW files in seconds.
plus I hate the thought of a faulty pc blowing up my D300
trust me there used to be viruses out there that upped your pc's voltages .
if you do connect camera to pc you should connect with both OFF and disconnect with both OFF ,this is far to much hassle for me
