Re: New cam... Nikon D700

Well, finally took the plunge today. Just popped into Curry's to see and feel the D700 and guess what, it is now sitting in front of me. First impressions are the wonderful viewfinder, the ease of adjusting the camera settings and well, it just feels good in the hands.

Re: New cam... Nikon D700

Well done Jeff, it's a lot of cash to handover but if you can see the benefit. Camera is excellent, couple of features i can use for pictures i don't publish here, the artificial horizon and the built in intervalometer. The later I didn't realise.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of quality compared to your D300. I find on a lot of shots there is little difference and in fact miss one or two of my old DX lenses. What lens will you be using with yours? I need to have a complete rethink what I want as a kit as i have a complete mix of DX and FX.

Azz, the price fluctuates so much at Currys. A few weeks ago they had the best price you could find especially if you bought online with a publicised discount code...approx. £1650. Last time I looked on the website a few days ago, the in-store price was quite dear at £1850-ish. Jessops were about £1769. They are going secondhand at around £1250-1400.

Re: New cam... Nikon D700

Curry's do a price comparison check, it was priced up at £1850 but the deal is they will equal any proven price difference plus a further 10% od the difference so I actually paid £1761 but Nikon have extended the free Nikon MB-D10 Battery Grip offer to the end of July so I gain a bit there. Just missed a great deal on TP, D700 + 24-70m lens all still in warranty went for £2250.

Also need to look at lenses BC, I am keeping the D90 and 18-105 and the other few lenses I have are suitable for DX. I will be looking to getting a couple more though, I would like the 24-70 2.8, I would also like the 70-200 2.8 but it is quite expensive.

I note, BC, you have the Nikon 80-200 2.8, how do you rate it as it is retailing circa
£700. Ken Rockwell's report on this lens is quite favourable.

Re: New cam... Nikon D700

Congrats on your latest acquisition BC.

I have to confess to being a fan of FF, as I've never got used to 1.6 crop cameras when I first went over to digital from film.

Re: New cam... Nikon D700

Hi Jeff, my 80-200 is the old push-pull version. Nevertheless its excellent. It's pretty big and heavy but a brilliant performer. It's a professional lens of course although most professionals have moved on. The later 2-touch version is pretty popular. I too would like the 70-200 (and 24-70), but have to draw the line somewhere. Both lenses are the bees knees, but photography gives me no direct income so have to limit my spend as i have other obligations (and a mrs that would kill me if she knew half!)
