They are all nice cameras with similar features - I don't think you can go wrong with either, so I'd personally look at photos taken with these cameras and see if you prefer the look of one over the others. Also, check they have the features you want (don't think they all offer hd movies?)

pbase.com is a good place to check out photos taken with certain cameras

Re: super zoom / and good manual control with good image quality

The Panasonic has the best lens and the Canon screen (on the back) is flexible but in my opinion too small.

I shoot with the Panasonic and get great results.

I don't think anyone here has them all 0V... might be an idea to do a quick google for reviews

You say you want to get into "serious " photography then come up with compact point and shoot examples. Why?
If I may politely suggest it would help if you purchased a few photographic magazines to give you better insight into photography

No matter how good a compact camera is they still limit you tremendously in what you can do.

Don't get me wrong they may well be good cameras and produce great pictures BUT not for serious photography which you emphasised.

You should be looking at DSLR cameras even though you havn't asked for DSLR advice so I am not going to suggest any make/model. Again I won't go into the advantages of a DSLR but believe me they are many.

Check out this site for camera data

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp

And go to camera data base. that will give you what you are looking for I believe. Just click on the cameras you are interested in for full spec and info and owners opinions

Absolutely agree with Bazza - it's about the best advice I can offer - you really should think about getting something with more flexibility if you're wanting to seriously get into photography!
