If you won loads of money and were about to spend it on some photography kit - what would you get?
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm
My Compact/P&S: Panasonic Lumix TZ7

Re: Your Dream Camera 2013

A beautiful female photographer. Joking apart my first thoughts would turn to getting a set of decent lens if we are talking about stills.

I would concentrate more on camcorders but would need to go talk to someone such as
http://www.hpreston.co.uk/ first as the choice is vast

Re: Your Dream Camera 2013

Bob what about the D4?

This new flagship offers speed and accuracy with a 16.2 MP FX-format CMOS sensor, 10 fps continuous shooting, a 91,000-Pixel RGB sensor and Advanced SRS, improved 51 point AF System, ISO expanded to 204,800 and 1080p video at 30p with stereo sound.

OK its not 36 MP but the frame rate is far quicker. If your taking shots of a horse going over a jump the D800 is useless where as the D4 would beat it hands down.

It boils down to what you want a camera for.

Try doing "catch the moment" on the link with the D800.

I shoot animals and landscapes, not sports. I need resolution, not FPS. The D4 is a specialty camera for those professionals that "Spray & Pray".

That depends on what you want to shoot, don't get me wrong for what you want yes it would be the finest camera available ( I wish could afford one). For others it would not suit. Press photographers and the like need something that is fast and the D800 just isn't up to the job. Even my D300 with the battery pack does a faster frame rate. OK 36 MP is one huge amount for a camera to deal with hence it being slower and would produce a better picture in the long run.

Question is how often do you want to blow up a photo the size of the side of a house? not very often ,so is 36mp going to actually be any better that say a 16 0r 24 MP camera

Just a note the D800 has dropped in price by over £600 ($972) and at nearly its lowest price ever right now so why arn't more buying it?

36 mp lets me crop perfectly and still maintain a resolution higher than a D4. 36 mp effectively doubles the focal length of my existing lenses which cost much more than a D800. The original question was a personal one. For me, there is no better camera than the D800. I'm still paying for my D800 and it's worth it. If I need a higher frame rate I also own a D7000 that has a 16.1 mp sensor and a faster frame rate than the D800.

Re: Your Dream Camera 2013

Not having a go at you bob far from it, just pointing out that it depends on what you want a camera for. you did say quote " finest camera available at any price." was my query presuming you ware talking about Nikon camera only.

If you then go on to say Hasselblad or similar then your talking about a completely diffent class of camera

That's why it's a personal choice. I don't care what anyone else uses. I've seen a lot of blurry photos taken with a Canon D7. I've taken a lot of very sharp pictures with my little Sony Alpha NEX-5N.
