Nikkon 70-300 4.0-5.6 + 70-300 vr 4.5-5.6 (Much difference between them?)

The Nikon Af 70-300/4.0-5.6 G is just £75, but the Vr 70-300 is £300!

Is there much difference in them apart from the VR?

I've got the cheaper one i think. It's good (it's what i used on my wolf photos) But it's a bit slow when it comes to focusing on things....

No idea about the other...

Can you post some (more) of your pics taken with it please Stuart?

What do you think about the quality? So far the pics I have seen taken with it don't seem as sharp as the VR one... (but what do you expect its only £75 brand new lol)

Hi Azz,

I'll dig some shortly...

I've been happy with it considering the money i paid (£100) but that was a couple of years ago.

i've never had any problems with the sharpness of images from it... it was just annoying when i took it to a bird of prey show, and i couldn't get it to focus fast enough...

Well worth £70 though.

Hey Azz.

The glass on the cheaper lens isnt as good. The VR version has extra low dispersion elements which makes high-quality images throughout the entire zoom range. It also reduces any CA (purple fringing) and will be much sharper than the cheaper version of it. However saying that, unless you see the results side by side, an untrained eye wont notice much difference.....

Thanks for the info K + Stuart!

Phil - they look great! Do you miss it not having VR? Would VR make much difference? DO you have to use a Tripod much?

Dawn didn't know you had a nikon D/SLR!

A tripod (providing it's a sturdy one) will improve your pictures no end regardless of the lens and it's features.

For the record - none of those samples were taken with a tripod.

If I'm really trying for best results I'll always us a tripod for my landscape pictures as the mountains aren't in any rush. Dog's on the other hand - I find a tripod hinders me as they never stay where I want them.

A lot depends on how 'shakey' you are. A really early start hillwalking on a Saturday morning is great to clear the head after a heavy Friday night out but it does nothing for camera shake LOL.
