Photography Competitions

Another thing that I would think a lot of people are interested in, is photography competitions.

Do you have any tips? Either for entering the competitions or perhaps finding them?

How do you get _your_ photo to stand out from everyone else's? Would you go for the tried and tested 'safe' photos - or dare to go a little crazy and maybe use shock tactics? What what you do when entering a photography competition?

Re: Photography Competitions

The only competition I did enter was a worldwide one run by a very well known
international photographic company and did manage joint 6th place. That was a few years back but no doubt others on here have done far better.
Maybe it is the "twist " to the competition theme against the obvious that does it.
The photo is in the "my favorite photo" of the swan ( slightly cropped from original) with the wings arched up. Now the competition theme was "love" and swans arch the wings when courting and showing off. This is what I mean by a "twist" to the obvious which makes a photo stand out. The first thought is a picture of a couple together in an embrace.
