Which Full frame DSLR

It's perhaps hypothetical for the next few months but.....

If you were going to purchase a full frame DSLR which model would you go for ?

I appreciate some people have invested heavily in quality lenses so may only consider certain brands but this isn't really the case for me.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

D700 or D3, DX3 would be my ascending choices. Same as Azz really.

Re: Which Full frame DSLR

Looking at your current kit phil, I know what I'd do, sell the Nikon gear and get your self a Canon 5d MKII and the 17-40mm f4.0 L you have also been considering buying. I'd hang on to the 40d for wildlife shots as well

I think you have 3 choices (just now) Phil, the Nikon d700, Canon 5d MKII or the Sony A900 (or indeed the 5d). I would suggest to read as many pro reviews as possible for each camera and decide yourself which cam will be best for you for the type of shooting you will mainly be doing.
Kit 1
Canon 5D MKII
Canon 400mm f5.6 L
Canon 70-200mm f4.0 L
Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L
Kit 2
Canon 50d

Cheers DJ

I'd certainly hang onto the 40D for the 6.5 fps - action shots etc.

Don't fancy the Sony. Read a few reviews and it doesn't seem geared to landscapes. I understand 'not an ideal landscape camera' but scratch my head at "falls short at high sensitives & chroma noise in blue skies"

I still maintain I've never had any problems with Nikon or Canon so at the risk of sounding dull - I'm probably sticking with one or the other.

What I really want out of this is the full 'angle' benefit of some better lenses (for wide landscapes) - that's the reason for wanting full frame.

No way I can stretch to a 5D MK II

Nikon D700 or Canon 5D seem the obvious models for me. 12 (ish) MP are more than enough.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
1D2 & 40D

Re: Which Full frame DSLR

Out of those two it would be the D700 for me without a doubt, you get all the modern technology.

The weigh up between the D700 and MK2 is more difficult - which one's noise handling do you prefer? Do you need the D700's ISO (tho MK2's is no slouch), do you need the MK2s pixels?

I was looking at camerapricebuster and the cheapest the MK2 has sold for was £1599, and the cheapest the D700 sold for was £1499 - both in Dec!!

Re: Which Full frame DSLR

Needless to say I'd be in the dog house if i just went and bought one so (although I'd like to keep the fast 40D) I may have to sell everything (camera wise) for this move but to be honest - if I did - it wouldnt make much sense to keep the rest.

17-40mm L lens (or Nikon equiv) would do 90% of what I need. I'd make do with with either my Nikon or Canon longer lens for now.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
