Re: Sigma 170-500mm F/5-6.3 APO DG lens for sale.

Because they are in need of light to full stretch they can be slow shutter speed, however once you come to terms with this they are sharp enough.

Have to say the two on here do not look that sharp but that may be in the uploading.

Re: Sigma 170-500mm F/5-6.3 APO DG lens for sale.

At the 500mm end they need light or you get a slow shutter, for birds of animals that can be a problem but once you accept that you can get sharp shots. The two on this thread are not that good but may be in the uploading process.

Here is one of mine at 500mm

Would think it is possible to criticise this as being soft but printed it is fine and I think most people would be happy enough with this result.

You also have to take into account the distance you are shooting at, 500mm doesn't tell you this.

Re: Sigma 170-500mm F/5-6.3 APO DG lens for sale.

You guys have moved on to the Bigma not the 170-500mm that Bazza had. My only point was that lens didn't look sharp, or at least not in the examples I saw. The rule of thumb that used to be stated in 35mm film days was that the minimum shutter speed employed should be approximate numerically to the focal length, i.e. 500mm would be 1/500 sec to prevent shake. Years ago I couldn't imagine anyone advocating hand holding at 500mm, let alone the equivalent 750mm you guys are using as you have crop sensors. You would expect to see tripods or monopods although the VR/IS would help on the Bigma. If there is no camera shake then assuming you have a fast enough shutter speed to prevent subject movement the sharpness will then depend on the quality of the glass as will contrast etc. I thought that 170-500mm seemed to be lacking contrast and sharpness. I did wait until it was sold elsewhere to say this!

Sorry BC I thought you were talking of any Sigma lens at 500mm, of course the Bigma is not the 170-500.

As Bazza has said the distance between the end of the lens and the subject also has a bearing, the robin was a matter of 20 mtrs the tractor very much more.

Yes, the water droplets and dust in the atmosphere will affect the contrast and a telephoto does have an effect of compressing diistance.

Re: Sigma 170-500mm F/5-6.3 APO DG lens for sale.

It is a bit sad that the only thing being discussed on the forum is the merits of a lens that has been sold.

However as we are talking telephoto lens I did have a problem coming to terms with the Bigma, of course, you do have to learn about any new lens and it takes time to find the 'sweet spot' but it seems with each 50mm of length the problems become that bit more of a challenge so as you get toward the 500mm mark there seems to be more to think about and not enough hands and figures to cope. Would imagine that primes of longer length would be easier to deal with but not being that rich I don't know as I don't own one.
