"This young lady has spent a year on an animal management course and now moved onto a photography course for some reason or other"-- I orginally wanted to do a photography course after leaving school however I had to wait a year as it only started this year 
Im interested in nature photography, I asked about both lenes as I also try taking macro images of bugs, flys etc so I assume that a macro lens can also be useful for that field of work

That's right. Having 60mm range incorporated into a telephoto zoom (70-300 or to 200) isn't the same as having a dedicated macro lens. I would guess few mateurs could afford to spend a few hundred pounds on a dedicated macro but they are good fun to play with when you get one. You don't see them advertised secondhand too often either.
Bazza was right when he said it takes a while to build up a range of lenses. Most are quite an investment to pay out but if you were pursuing a career and you know you are good it could be worth it to get the kit and stick with it. Have to have be extra special though. Many people following the dream of wanting to be a professional photographer but few really achieve it...

Thanks for all your advise, as I say most of the time when I ask people about lenes and camera's its more out of interest than wanting to buy one. I know the field that I want to go into after University so the more questions I ask the more help I get As for this lens, Ive been after it for a while but was unsure if I should get it or not, 7 out of 10 pictures I take is more macro-ish so I figured as with my slr if I get it early on Ill have more time to get used to it
