Nikon D200

A couple of years ago the Nikon D200 was the must have camera and promoted as a semi pro camera. Now its being totally ignored and hardly ever seen advertised in the glossy magazines by retailers.

Ok the D300 is the camera of the moment but surely the D200 still has a place in the Nikon lineup. As you may guess that D200 is the model I have and I just can't seem to fathom out the abandonment of such a fine camera. Should I in the future want to upgrade to the D300 then I would still keep this one as a backup. As for the latest D700 I have been reading some reports that it is not actually all it is cracked up to be and the D300 looks on paper a far better camera. Ok the d700 is not top of the range and I would suspect many would miss out the d700 for the D3. After all if your going to spend neigh on £2000 one might as well put a little more in the pot and go for the ultimate.

I would be interested in reading other members viewpoints on the demise of the D200

Re: Nikon D200

The D200 is the camera I first set out to buy when I eventually ended up getting a Canon 40D.

I guess it's 'ignored' in magazines etc because Nikon / retailers aren't pushing it any longer as it's no loinger a current model.

Re: Nikon D200

I think that the D200 is being marketed a lot less due to the nature of the DSLR market, i.e. that everyone wants the "latest thing" possibly a wrong assumption. The D200 is a generation behind in the eyes of Nikon, and they are marketing the camera's that they have the biggest profit margin on and that they are more likely to shift.

I think that you will see a similar reduction in the marketing of the D300 as the onus passes on to the D700, as the "featured" camera's in the photo magazines will be the D3 and the D700. Probably due to the fact that the promo models that Nikon send out to mags will be those 2.

I personally am in the hold out for a D3 camp when it comes to the D700 vs D3, although by the time it comes to me to change my camera I'm hoping to go for the D3x

Re: Nikon D200

That's technology for you, each new model is designed to be 'better' than the model it is replacing.

It's how we progress, and get more and more features for the same, or sometimes lower price.

We just have to acknowledge that our cameras are going to go 'out of date' within 1 to 2 years, and the newer cameras will boast even more features. That does not mean however our cameras are useless - many of us keep them for much longer than 2 years!

I am sure the D400 will kick the D300's butt just as much when it is released - but I will keep my D300 for at least 3 years before I even begin to think about upgrading.

Re: Nikon D200

I thought I would ressurrect this thread as I am a fan of the D200 too. I used one when I was working abroad and am particularly disappointed to see the continued high price of them here in the UK. I don't think I can get away with buying a D300 with the Mrs so I was trying to get a good price on a D200. No way! Those people that still have them are happy to charge as much as, or not far off a D300 price! I've looked around many places, can you believe Asda who I thought wouldn't have them, or would be selling them off if they did want £1100 for a body!

Anyway, making me think more now about a D300 and of course it is an improvement on the D200. I am also interested to see how the D90 looks. I can't imagine Nikon will have crippled a new camera to be a lesser performer than the three year old D200 or possibly even the year old D300?

Re: Nikon D200

D200 is a great camera, before the D300 came out it was the camera I would have loved to have

The D90 has very good high ISO handling, so certainly worth a look - esp if you want a video function.

D300 is still, to my surprise, selling extremely well at almost the same price I bought mine for! I'd have thought it would drop in price after the release of the D700, but it hasn't.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!
