Nikon S550 - I just got a new toy!!

It was one of those spontaneous buys that some may have a problem justifying. I just bought a Nikon S550 pocket digital camera. This will be my 3rd Nikon pocket digital as I have previously owned a Nikon L1 & L12 camera. This one is a 10.0 megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom, vibration reduction, ISO 2,000 & a 2.5" LCD. It's a tiny camera that uses a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. It doesn't come with an SD memory card but that's not a problem as I just happened to have 2 spare 2 gig cards. The battery is on its initial charge right now as I meticulously read the owner's manual cover to cover to see what this bad boy can do. I'll report back after I know more.

Always good to see a Nikon slide off the shelf.

Not replacing the 40x though I trust.

I would never replace an SLR with a pocket camera. This is just something I can easily slip in my pocket when I don't feel like toting the big camera bag. Holiday visits would be an example of where the pocket camera would be ideal. I may have to wait until Sunday for my first chance to try out the point & shoot. Nikon P&S cameras are generally more advanced, allowing for multiple shooting modes, redeye correction, white balance setting & adjustable auto-focus settings. Price tag was $200

I have a Nikon L10 [well my son has, but he lets me borrow it for a bags of sweets lol]

Did'nt think for 1 second it would replace the 40x

In my post praising pocket cameras I mention my love for the lowly pocket digital. My new Nikon S550 has a lot of features that include some that are on digital SLRs. The image stabilization , white balance and continuous shooting modes make it's 10.3 megapixel resolution look mighty attractive for the price. I don't believe I'm losing a lot of quality with this mighty midget in my pocket.
