New lens arriving today

I have the latest version of the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor lens being delivered today. My separation package from Intel was generous enough for me to justify spending a chunk of it for what will be my last purchase of gear. I've read a dozen reviews of this versatile lens and each touted a very good product. It will allow me to travel carrying just one lens mounted on my D90. It replaces 4 lenses I now own with its wide range of coverage. I am excited and plan to immediately go for a shoot tomorrow.

Re: New lens arriving today

Have to be honest I am not a big fan of all in one zooms but this particular one has a good reputation as a walkaround/travel lens which covers many situations. i covered an event on Saturday and came back with backache and neck ache (which I still have). The focal lengths I carried? 17mm - 200mm on full frame. Ok, I had the advantage of some nice glass with wide apertures but most of my pics were at around f4.5-f5.6. This one lens almost does it! Excellent Bob, enjoy it.

With me traveling a lot by scooter or motorcycle size and weight do matter. I feel this new lens will eliminate the need to carry my stuffed camera bag while hiking up & down trails getting to the base or top of a waterfall.

You know how I love my 60mm micro as I see you also own one. I'm not going to sell all my lenses and just use the versatle 18-200mm that's coming but I will put it through its paces to see where it can help.

Re: New lens arriving today

I think you would be glad of that 60mm in your bag many days...and quite fast at f2.8!

I had a rucksack full of gear and only used two lenses the other day...24-70 and 80-200 but you never know what you might encounter! Actually I did read that pro's would probably go out and be happy with something like a 17-35 and a 70-200 and use their legs for the missing bit! Apparently amateurs carry all the gear...that must be me then!

Re: New lens arriving today

Moose Peterson, famous outdoor & wildlife photographer, pointed out that while using a zoom you still need to move around because different focal lengths still produce different perspectives in a composition. Wise man there.
