nikon d40 and d40x

ok, so i also go on another forum. sorry.

they are far more up themselves than here and to be honest i prefer here, but alas sometimes its quiet.

recently they [the up themselves crew] have been telling new peeps not to touch the nikon d40 and d40x. why is this??

are they just snobs?

they go on about auto focusing problems.

im sad cause its what im saving my pennies for.]

i see pics taken on these cameras and they look great.

so please put my mind at rest.

as 400 pounds is tops for me at the mo

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

They look fine to me aswell, I have had both reccomended to me while looking to see what to buy. It maybe like what you get in the gaming world, "fanboyisim" players align them selfs to one console and moan about the others, often quoting things wrong what no average game would know or care about.

I am sure someone will be along with more knowledge on the subject.

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

Its coz nikon have now decided to take the auto focus motor out of the body. So unlles you buy AF lenses, you will have to focus manually

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

Also, regarding lens, it's only really an issue if you intend to buy older second hand lenses - as all new nikon lenses have af built in as far as I know

My plan has always been to:

Buy the D40.

Buy an additional Nikon lens (say 55-200)

Buy another Nikon lens (say a macro lens)

Maybe buy another lens if I feel like it.

In between, buy a better flash, tripod etc

Then I'll have outgrown the D40 (prob 2 to 3 years down the line) and will be ready for a D80

And the great news is I should be able to use all my lens, flash and tripods with it

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

There are other cameras around the same price (maybe not nikon). But there's nothing wrong with going for the D40/D40x.... Chances are you'll only ever have one or two lenses for it. The kit lens will be Auto Focus... and just make sure if you buy another lens it has autofocus ability.... not a great problem by any means.

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

so you guys are saying that the lens that comes with the camera has auto focus and will be fine [ although im learning to shoot in manual i do want autofocus]

and if i buy any future lens i should always double check it has an auto focus feature???

is this right ???

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

I have the D40 and the kit lens come with a switch which allows you to use auto or manual focus, my Nikon 55-200mm lens also has the same function on the lens, the only thing I would say is that be carefull if you buy a different make of lens with autofocus as it may not work on the d40, I tried the Sigma 70-300mm with autofocus at my friends BILs, but the autofocus didn't work on my camera, hth

Re: nikon d40 and d40x

There is nowt wrong with the D40. I love mine and I'm learning tons with it. The pics I get with it are amazing and it is very easy to use. It is my first DSLR and I would recommend it to anyone. One of the reasons I got it was because of it's light weight and small size. So what if it needs lenses with a motor in them to use AF? It only limits your choices a bit and more and more lenses are being made to be compatible with it because it is such a popular camera.

I will always stand up for my little camera
