I also use the Hoya Pro B1 on my L lenses, you will not see IQ issues with the naked eye. I would rather bust a £50 filter than a £xxxx lens.

Having said that, if you put the hood on most of my lenses, you would be hard pressed to knock them anyway

I am happy in the knowledge that the end of my lenses are in the same mint condition now as when I took them out of the box.

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

I always keep a filter on my lens, but in my case it's a circular polariser. But whatever the filter, it does help protect the lens.

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

I do actually, did it first of all to see what difference it made and most of the time it's little more than like having a skylight filter on the front, apart from the fact it's dark!

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

Your choice of course.

if you don't mind for the benefit of anyone who wasn't sure why I mentioned it as there are a few learners in the forum. Typically a polariser will cause a very small degradation in image quality, possibly undetectable, but more importantly you will lose at least a stop of light (advantageous in some situations) and only in certain situations will the polariser actually have the effect it is designed for. A polariser is used at an angle to the sun, and you rotate the glass to reduce reflections on non-metallic surfaces, water, windows etc. and deepen the blue of skies (see any travel brochure). Most people fit them when they are to be used rather than keeping them on permanantly which was why I asked Kenty. How we choose to do our photography is of course our own choice.

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

No problems. Most of my photography is outdoor and I tend not to carry a camera bag with me so I just leave filter in place for the occasions when I need it. I feel it's drawbacks are outweighed by leaving it in place

Here's a slightly modified shot I took with it in place:

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

Have you tried or thought about getting a UV filter Kenty? That way you get the protection but without no real change to the photos

Re: Who uses UV/Protection filters or not?

I'm qute happy with just leaving the polariser on - it hasn't caused me any difficulties to date.
