Re: What tripod?

It all depends on what you want a tripod for. By this I mean for static studio work or carrying about. Whichever you choose, one test thats easy but in my opinion necessary, that is having the tripod fully extended to try out with the camera. A flimsy tripod will shake in this position which is totally useless as a camera shutter movement will transpose through the tripod causing blur. The other things to look out for is how high/low they can go, quite often you may wish to take photos at ground level for bugs/flowers etc. If the tripod doesn't get to that level then forget it. It is advisable also to use a remote shutter release (wireless or corded). There is absolutely no point in having a tripod then pushing the shutter button to cause camera shake. I would strongly advise checking out several in a camera shop together with your camera to see what suits.

Re: What tripod?

I would advise going to a shop if you can and having a feel of a few tripods, pick one that feels like it'll be good and sturdy, that goes to the right heights and depths for you too!

Re: What tripod?

Paul

Thats the advantage of being a member of at least one photographic site. There generally is someone able to suggest what to look for. Only too happy to help on this occassion.

Oh don't forget to check out the weight the tripod can support. You don't want to find the lens starts creeping to the pointing down only position.

Re: What tripod?

I own 3 Manfrotto tripods and one Manfrotto Monopod. I love the Manfroto 785B Tripod. It's a compact 4 section tripod that comes with a cool quick release plate for your camera that matches the plate on the tripod head. The head has a pistol grip one button release that makes adjustment quick & easy. There are leveling bubbles onboard ans well as solid leg locking mechanisms. This tripos cost me $60 and will hold a dslr with up to a 200mm lens.

Re: What tripod?

I have a Slik Tripod which I hardly use, but I got a Manfrotto monopod and quick release head at Christmas, as my Tripod was too heavy hiking, and a big bean bag for using large rocks as a support.. So, hoping this will be better to take.
