What do you think about the Canon 50mm 1.4 ?

I also had a play with the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens today. Here are a couple of shots.

What are your impressions of this lens? All the lenses I own are >f2.8 and I am looking at purchasing a lens that I can use in low light situations. The other lens I am considering, the 85mm f1.8, wasn't in stock at the shop so I couldn't get a feel for that one too.

(Obviously if I get one of the two on the other thread, then the low light lens will have to wait ).

Hey ya,

I have the 50mm f1.8 and i love it.... you have seen the pictures i can get with it James bought me the lens last year. If i were buying again i'd get the f1.4, just a better quality lens

Forgot to mention... there is a canon specialist shop in guildford, much better than Jessops and do repairs and cleaning too, its called photo optix and is up by blacks (near Nando's)... they also do exchanges of lenses, its where i got my tripod from I'm sure if they go in there they'll be able to give you loads of advice

Oh yes, some of the shots you have got with the 50mm f1.8 are amazing. As you say, the f1.4 is a better quality lens (slightly better IQ and faster AF) but it is also 4x more expensive than the f1.8, which gets very good reviews for it's price and the shots it delivers. I was sorely tempted to get one I just need to decide on the focal length I want (bearing in mind I already have the 100mm f2.8). I couldn't get over how small the lens was though - I'm used to zooms and even my macro is huge compared to this one

Thanks for that! There is a very good independant photographic store in Woking too, the staff actually know what they are talking about where as in Jessops they don't have a clue However Jessops are good at having several different Canon lenses in stock, where as the independant store generally have to order them in Mind you, if the one in Guildford is a Canon specialist store, then I will certainly be popping in soon. They are up on the elevated part then?

I was faintly amused today - Jessops had a Canon *specialist* in store for the day who was available to answer any questions - well, he was blooming useless! Couldn't answer anything I asked of him (and the questions weren't even that tough!).

Yeah its up on the elevated bit, i think right next door to blacks They have a good range in there and do new and used lenses so you could pick up a good deal

There is another shop one of the side streets off the main high street (the cobbled one) its up by Game you go through the white pillars and its up there on the left... can't remember what its called but its just passed the wedding shop
