How are D300 users finding the camera?

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

LOL I had a conversation like this once with Azz where I worded something wrong I could of been banned

I have had another play with some Nikon's in Jessops and I think the reason they feel weird is because I am not used to them, the Canon's feel more comfy because I have one.

Azz how much did you pay for you D300? Has the price dropped much?

I want a body that is going to last me a few years, so I can then spend the money on glass. i AM TOTALLY CONFUSED AT THE MOMENT

I keep going to DPreview and reading the reviews.

Sorry Jack rambling as usual.

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

The D90 seems to be the top APS-C camera at the moment for image quality? It has a refined image processor beating the D300 although the D300 is a more professional camera. The D300 beat the 50D in magazine tests although marginally. I prefer my D70s to the D90 though which seems smaller and slippier in hand. I used to use Nikons, then Canons, now Nikon again. If I was buying a camera for a few years it had to be a D300 or start again with a D700. I think one day we will go full frame. Personally I wish I had started digital with a Canon and splashed out on a Canon 5D. They sell at around 750 secondhand and it's full frame quality. Look at many magazines reader pictures and competition winners and many are on 5D's.

The D300 is around £890 at places like Warehouse Express. Jessops price on the D300 has gone up from £899 to £924 but there are one or two codes knocking around. You can't get a discount on any DSLR's but if you add an accessory like a lens or a bag and take it over £1000 you can get a £50 discount with a code so comes at minimal price. The cheaper D300's are not usually Uk stock. Wouldn't buying in the US be better? The Americans pay almost the same in dollars we pay in pounds or thereabouts! You will require a local warranty too?

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

Lol @ JR! I wish I had the time

They've gone down to £878 now Moon - at currys with discount code '5weekend'!

Surprisingly, they haven't dropped much in price at all! I thought they would have when the D700 came out, but they didn't even budge only now they've dropped a bit.

Nikon are known for their ergonomics - maybe you need to spend a little more time with one? The controls are in all the right places - feels perfect to use. I don't think I would change any of the layout.

Picture quality is fantastic, great ISO performance too. Battery life is also excellent.

When looking at reviews and review samples, pay attention to lens used and how much those lens cost. When I researched the D40 vs canons 400D, dpreview used th kit lens for all (or almost all) the d40 sample shots and none (or very few) of the sample shots were taken with the canons kit lens! Extremely missleading if you ask me - and that's why dpreview lost a lot of respect from me. Although it didn't matter in that case anyway, as the D40 kit lens held it's own

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

I have spent alot of time lurking on Pbase looking at Nikon D300 pics and they are awesome. I definitely want a more advanced camera that will last awhile, and as much as I adore my Oly the actual camera range is small .
I never splashed out loads when I got my first DSLR as I wanted to see if I really liked photography, and I don't like it . I Love it

I am lucky they are very tolerant of me in my local Jessops very patient, I was quizzing the poor salesman again about the 50D and the D300, and he was saying both excellent cameras.

Azz you could give me your D300 for a week

BC I have been looking at US websites, need to ask Bob who he recommends . I am just trying to decide, once I have decided then it is cool

Thanks for your input guys x

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

thanks for all of your input - I'm currently leaning towards the D700.

Moonie - have a look at this link for Nikon/Canon (inc D300) images. The uptake of the D300 this year has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Re: D300 Users - how are you finding it?

Azz...

Yes it is expensive, and I still blame you for inviting me over here
But,it's fun too, I look at things in a completely different way now

Do you really want a D700? Wow! very nice. Full frame, wish I could afford it, but can't

It is naughty, you really wanted that camera, and now it is sat there all alone, when it should be out having adventures

Now am I right in thinking you can use full frame lenses on a DX body, but not DX lenses on a full frame body? or have I got that wrong
