Wales 2012 - Local Birds - Image heavy

This will be my final thread for now, all images uploaded just a small % of total images taken, would take me forever and a day to upload them all, although at the same time i would not want to bore you all to sleep

Images 1,2 & 3 - Blackbirds

Image 4 - Dunnock

Image 5 - Jackdaw. Never seen so many Jackdaws in one place, sadly they were quite far away, still worth photographing, magnificent birds.

Image 6 -Long tailed Tit - A decent shot of a LTT still eludes me.

Image 7 - Male and Female Chaffinch

Images 8 & 9 - Male Chaffinches

Image 10 - Manky Mallard i think

Image 11 - My very 1st Nuthatch, great watching these from the cottage

Image 12 - Pied Wagtail

Image 13 & 14 - Grey Wagtail. There seems very little difference between the Grey and Yellow Wagtails other than the dark area on its chin. Sadly this one would not come down into the garden unlike the Pied so did not get good shots of it.

Image 15 - Song Thrush i think. When they were in the tree line and singing they definately sounded like song Thrushes, but still i am not 100% sure that it is, its markings are similar to Redwings, although they should be long gone by now

Image 16 - The Alien Chicken - Actually a Silkie Bantam, could not get a clear photo of it, funny looking birds though

Image 17 - Ducks or Geese. When they are stood this tall and walking around like that i would say they are geese, although somebody told me they are ducks. Any ideas anybody??

What a nice varied selection.

Nuthatch is still on my list of birds to photograph and you're not alone in being frustrated by long tailed tits as I find they don't often stay still for long enough.

I'm no expert but your ducks look like Running Ducks to me. Karen's sister keeps Indian Running Ducks which are one type of running duck but I couldn't tell you exactly what sort of Running Ducks these are.

Thanks Phil. Nuthatches are fantastic little birds, i could of watched them all day long, these were the last thing i expected to see though so they were a nice surprise.
I do struggle identifying Ducks and Geese sometimes, especially if they are quite large and out of water.
What i was waiting patiently for were bullfinches, but they did not turn up before we left.
When we do go here again i am taking a one of my nyjer seed feeders as i know there are goldfinches in the valley, seen a few when we had a walk around, but like the LTT`s did not stay around for long.

Re: Wales 2012 - Local Birds - Image heavy

As Phil said, a fantastic varied selection Mark. I would just be happy to get a shot of a LTT I've not even seen one yet

Love shot 9, it's on the button for me.

Enjoyed looking, thanks.

Re: Wales 2012 - Local Birds - Image heavy

Thanks Ken. That Chaffinch was taken at Pistyll Rhaeadr. This was one of many Chaffinches in the area, they would come and sit on the fence at the cafe there waiting for scraps, perfect position for them to be photographed as the bg was nice and clean

Great set of images, Chaffy on the post stands out, followed closely by the 3rd Blackbird shot.

Re: Wales 2012 - Local Birds - Image heavy

Thanks Brian I think out of all the birds i imaged the Chaffinch was one of the most photographed birds, with the Nuthatch a close 2nd. I love Blackbirds though too, wonderful little birds, they got plenty of image time as well

Re: Wales 2012 - Local Birds - Image heavy

I am not 100% sure what it was Laura.
Listening to them in the tree line they definitely sounded like Song Thrushes, sounding a bit like a telephone ringing out. Then again we could of had both Mistle and Song Thrushes in the area.......
I do really struggle IDing Thrushes.
