Restoring old pictures

On another non photographic site I belong to I have often been asked if I can restore an old picture. In some cases the answer is yes up to a point and with others definately no.
I find that the quality of the photo and how old plays a tremendous part in how much restoration can be done, even down to drawing out colours that arn't obvious straight away.

Getting rid of the old age overall look isn't that hard, its the spots/blemishes/folds and scratches that the harder part. Hardest of all is keeping the features.

Actually its one of the challanges I do enjoy when nothing else to do, I have yet to try to work on a 35mm slide of which I have many and must attempt at some stage for my own satisfaction.

Has anyone else been asked to do similar and if so how did they get on?
