Lighting for product photos

I have been asked by a friend to do some product photos.
They will be dolls on plain white backgrounds.
I'm thinking my softboxes (continuous light) will do the job but might need a bit of feathering I was I will need to avoid any glare/reflections off the plastic.
Any thoughts?

Re: Lighting for product photos

Think some of our Yoppers have done similar so hopefully they'll chime in. In the meantime I found these threads with mini studio shots:

And I think this thread has a link to some useful info:

Re: Lighting for product photos

Thanks for those links.
Interesting project to try sometime.

I do have a table top light box but I think the dolls will be too big for that so I was looking for ideas on a light set up with a white seamless background.
I can borrow most things from my dad (umbrellas, reflectors etc. galore) but I am thinking the soft boxes might do the job.

Re: Lighting for product photos

nope
I guess I'll just have to wait for the dolls to arrive then have a play.

Re: Lighting for product photos

Well, I've never photographed dolls, and the glare is going to be the worst problem.

I would of thought continuous lighting in softboxes would be fine. TBH when I am not sure what is the best way to light something, I try several different options. Could you not use one of Hatti's dolls, to see if continuous, flash or a combo of both would be the way to go.

You could try and make a giant light tent, using sheets, and a background.

Re: Lighting for product photos

Thanks Moonie.
Do you think a light box effect is going to be best? Diffused light floding from all directions?
