Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

Don't just go by specs. Canon tends to overstate their cameras abilities while Nikon understates theirs.
The D700 has more than twice the high ISO capability.
The 5D2 can produce a better picture up to ISO 1600, above that the D700 easily wins.

The D700 is much easier to use and more forgiving of user error due to lower pixel count, better focusing, presets, and ergonomics.

However, I expect that the user is fairly proficient in the Canon system after "outgrowing" a 350D.

I suggest that he get his "hands on" both cameras before deciding.
Thats a very helpful (and untrue) statement.

Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

There are, as well known, two basic camps-Canon and Nikon, both are as good as each other. It usually comes down to a couple of things, using a make your used to,or how a camera feels in the hand. Nikon owners swear by Nikon as do Canon owners swear by Canon. At the end of the day apart from slightly different specs there really is very little difference in the final picture. The biggest difference is the tog behind the lens.

I agree!

I am sure glad that there are a lot of camera systems to choose from. The price and performance competition among all Camera Brands is very good for the consumer.

I've decided that different people are meant for different systems. I think it may be genetic as both of my sons were nearly instantly proficient with my Nikon D2h, D2x, and D3 cameras.

I just got a 5D2 and am finding it very hard to use but will endure the learning curve as I am not willing to wait for a D700x that may never be built nor can I afford the D3x for trips and hikes.

So, go try before you buy. Find what will work for you before you plunk down your hard earned dollars.
