Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

So I've been busy thinking recently about finally upgrading from my dated entry level Canon 350D. I was shooting photos at a gig last night and was crippled by the highest ISO range of 1400..

I had learned to deal with it and often did post processing to ensure visibility of the final image. But it wasn't until I saw a guy using a Nikon D90 that I actually saw how bad my camera was.

For my personally I feel I've outgrown this camera. It's taught me an awful lot but now I think its holding me back. I'm hoping to make a career out of photography after / if not before i graduate from University. I've been doing research into which body to get and I'm still unsure.

It makes sense to skip to a professional body as I'd like to think I'd make my money back on it should I get where I want to go. The Canon 7D isn't full frame so maybe isn't the right choice. So I'm currently in a toss up between a Canon 5DMkII & a Nikon 700.

Who has had experience with either of these and what are your thoughts?

Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

They are both great cameras and I don't think you can go wrong with either Dan.

Check our these threads:

Nikon D700 (photo threads)

Why I love the D700 (and D3) - I fear no darkness

Canon 5D MK2 (photo threads)

For me, the Canon offers higher res, but the Nikon's have a nicer 'dithering' (the 'texture' on close-up).

I think Nikon is very close to bringing out some new models btw - so the D700's should drop in price soon.

Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

Have you got much in the way of lenses that you will want to continue using?
I personally will be sticking with canon as I have canon lenses that I will carry on using, and my dad has more I can borrow!

I would see what lenses you have that you want to continue using, that may sway you - but both are cameras to be proud of! I would go D700 because as Azz said, the quality is so wonderfully smooth - I just love it - also I have the lenses... but I wouldn't sniff at either!

Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

Cheers for the heads up guys. I've got two lenses I could still use, a canon 50mm 1/8 and a tamron 70-300mm.

I never use the tamron lens though as I always find it really has soft focus. I've seen some great results with the nifty fifty on a 5D mind.

Tough decision, perhaps, see if you can borrow them from other photographers to have a play with each of them.

Re: Canon 5DMkII or Nikon 700? Thinking hard.

Out of those two I'd be thinking about the lenses you may want short term / long term.

If you're not thinking too much about lenses yet and it's definately one of those two you fancy - go with whichever feels best for you.

General view would be for quality landscapes - Canon - If speed is what you want - Nikon.

I came SO close to buying either a Nikon D700, Canon 7D or Canon 5DII a month or so ago. I liked the Nikon but prefered my options for Canon glass but then couldn't decide between the two Canon's so spent all the money on two lenses instead.

Id stick with what you have the glass for, otherwise you will have a huge outlay to boot. Dont some Nikon lenses not work on some bodies too?

The glass he has is relatively inexpensive - so I'd probably not worry too much about it when the body he's going for is going to cost so much. Plus he only uses his nifty fifty - they're pretty cheap these days.

What I am surprised about is the Canon 5DMK2 is now cheaper than the D700! You'd have thought the MK2 would have stayed higher longer. Nikon need to drop their prices - the D700's been out longer too!

That's one thing I don't like about the Nikons, they hold their value a lot longer - the D300 is still more expensive than what I paid for it two years ago!!
