Thanks again, for your help.
That is slightly different to what I would like to be able to do but it might have to do.
I am used to being able to do anything I like then step it back a bit with the fade option which is under undo.
My main computer isn't working today so I can't fiddle.
I have never used an adjustment layer before. If I add effects to the adjustment layer can I then fade those in and out using the opacity / blending options?
