One thing I would suggest is always resize your photos before uploading, no matter which host you use - compression on the server side is going to be done as fast as possible to save them money/resources, so you're likely to get better results by doing it yourself.

I pay for my Flickr account (actually I pay for two ) and have been more than happy with them.

Azz - I tend to let Flickr do the resizing for me and then use their default 'medium' picture to host, it seems to do a reasonable job. The reason I have started uploading rather large images is that I have had my second HDD go on me and I am fed up of loosing photos. If I store them online I can then retrieve them (as I have had to do recently).
