The 18-55 is surprisingly good Bob - I think it deserves the award of best kit lens ever! The D300 seems to like it to, esp the faster end

Moonie - I really like the sigma lens - some of those shots are ace, and it would be awesome for portraits. I just figured that and the 105 would cost about the same as the 17-55... seems like they were made for you
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm
My Compact/P&S: Panasonic Lumix TZ7

Re: Nikon 17-55mm F2.8 G IF - ED DX

Unless someone says it's really bad, I do think the Sigma lens and the 50mm are going to be my first lenses, makes sense. Then as soon as possible get the 105mm. As I do love macro .

I was looking at wide angle lenses for landscapes, and they are just as confusing. The trouble with deciding on Nikon,...... too much choice

I saw some lenses I am unfamiliar with, Tokina?

Bob- I have read that the 18-55 kit lens is really good too I have discovered Ken Rockwell too

Thanks for all your help and advice guys, xxx

I will always love my Oly though!

Your'e right though, it is going from not much choice, to sooooo many choices it's a bit bewildering TBH

I have 100% decided on the D300 too, unless the D700 drops absolutely loads
