Re: Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

Sorry to say but yes, totally wrong. Its a "Hunt Point Retrieve" gun dog, so far they are a rare breed only just over 200 in this country.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer has a few rather confusingly similar names including Slovakian Wire Haired Pointer, Slovakian Pointing Griffon, Slovakian Wire Haired Pointing Gun Dog or Slovensky Hrubosrsky Stavac! The breed type was founded in Slovakia around the 1940's. A hardy, versatile hunting dog was what was required and they were selectively bred, using the best available stock of the time. They consist of a mix, roughly a Weimaraner, German Wire Haired Pointer and Ceski Fousek.

I had Weimaraners for 18 years & find that my Slovak is so much like them, a little bit more chilled out though. I love both of the breeds.

Re: Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

Big fan of 'HPR' dogs and (as a breed) Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers are right up there with (GWHP) as the best of them.

Re: Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

Hi Mishka

What a lovely dog. I have Springer Spaniels which I work & field trial, but I do like HPRs, & Slovaks.

Have you ever been to the International HPR trials at Lotton Park, nr Shrewsbury, Shropshire? They are held towards the end of September each year.

Pretty much every HPR breed is represented and worked in the field over two days - air scenting, quarting and working ground and cover, handling retrieves at distance, waterwork, blood trailling, tracking deer, etc.

Here are a few of the pictures of the different HPR breeds I took on the day. You can have a smartie point for each one correctly identified!

Dog Breeds

Re: Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

Hi Jack,
at a guess (i do like smarties)
Dog 1 looks like a golden retriever! (but dont think it is)
Dog 2 is a Bracco Italiano
Dog 3 a Brittany Spaniel?
Dog 4 Weimaraner
Dog 5 German Shorthaired Pointer
Dog 6 could be Cesky Fousek or Pudelpointer
Dog 7 Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer
Dog 8 Korthals, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Dog 9 Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla

How did I do?
